Sinter House.
2017
To transform and upgrade the ground floor of a North London Edwardian terraced house, three steel structural box frames were meticulously designed and installed to support the existing structure and facilitate the creation of an open-plan rear and side extension. These frames ensured the lateral stability of the property following the removal of load-bearing walls, enabling a seamless integration of new spaces. The extension was designed to accommodate a modern kitchen and dining area, improving functionality while respecting the original character of the house. Strategically positioned glazed skylights and a central planted light well were incorporated to maximise natural light and maintain a connection with the outdoors. The light well also preserved original period features, such as the rear sash window, ensuring that the integrity of the Edwardian house remained intact.
Exposed painted rafters contribute to a rhythmic ceilingscape, extending beyond a rooflight to a vaulted ceiling over the dining area. Structural modifications were carefully executed to support these design elements while maintaining the minimalist aesthetic. Subtle architectural details, including shadow gap junctions and minimal-frame sliding doors, enhance the elemental simplicity of the space. The material palette, featuring polished marble, concrete-effect floor tiles, and white walls, provides a neutral backdrop that allows the craftsmanship of the brickwork to take centre stage.
A key aspect of the project was the celebration of brick construction, with a carefully detailed brick envelope forming the extension. The distinctive water-struck texture and tonal qualities of bricks sourced from the Lower Rhine region were complemented by recessed maroon mortar joints, creating a striking contrast with the original red Fletton bricks of the house. Bespoke brick detailing, including sloped brick coping and a brick-slip soffit system, ensured a seamless integration between old and new while reinforcing the structural and visual coherence of the extension. Through precise engineering and thoughtful material choices, the project successfully modernised the home while preserving its historical character.
